What is an Upper Eye Lift?

Upper eyelid blepharoplasty is one of the most common procedures I perform as an oculoplastic surgeon. As we age, the thin upper eyelid skin stretches and begins to sag and the fat pads of the eyelids start to protrude and appear puffy. Some people have a genetic predisposition to developing this earlier, and it can appear at an earlier age than you’d expect. Oftentimes, patients not only complain about the appearance of the eyelids, but they also have a feeling of heaviness with a reduction in their peripheral vision. This leads to difficulty performing daily tasks like driving, reading and working on the computer. This can feel like wearing a visor at all times.

To improve both the function and appearance of the eyelids a blepharoplasty is performed. This is a minor surgery that can be done in the office setting under local anesthesia and is very well tolerated. Upper eyelid surgery is often covered by insurance (we call this functional), but can be done for purely cosmetic reasons, too.

Upper Blepharoplasty FAQ

What happens during a consultation for upper blepharoplasty?

During our consultation, I will meet with you to discuss your concerns, review your medical history, and carefully examine your eyes, eyelids and face. After the examination, we will discuss your customized treatment plan and review the procedure, recovery and expected results. Consultations usually take about 30 minutes.

How long does it take to recover?

We recommend 5-7 days off from work. People working from home can resume light work (such as phone calls and emails) after 3 days. There will be some bruising and swelling of the eyelids for 1 to 2 weeks. Pain is mild; many patients have no pain at all. Ice packs for the first 2-3 days after surgery are the best way to reduce swelling.

How long does upper blepharoplasty surgery last?

Results usually last about 10-15 years, sometimes longer depending on factors like sun exposure, skin type, smoking, eye rubbing, and sleeping position.

For which ages do you recommend upper eyelid blepharoplasty?

I’ve performed upper eyelid blepharoplasty on patients in their 20s all the way to patients in their 90s. Age doesn’t really play a role in determining when a blepharoplasty should be performed. If there are visual concerns or cosmetic concerns, then blepharoplasty can be the answer.

What is a non-surgical eye lift, and does it work?

There are many non-surgical procedures designed to enhance the appearance of the upper eyelids including Botox, fillers, laser treatments, and minimally invasive skin and soft tissue tightening. Some of these may be better options for you and that would be determined during your consultation.
