Brow Lift & Forehead Lift

A brow lift and forehead lift is performed to address the position of the eyebrow and wrinkled forehead skin. Eyebrow position changes as we age from the effects of gravity, loss of fat volume and stretching of soft tissue. Previous eyelid/brow surgery may also affect the position of the brows. Occasionally eyebrow position can affect visual function and contribute to excess upper eyelid skin.

Treatment options range from simple injections of Botox to temporarily lift the brows to surgical approaches. Dr. Joos will discuss the best option for you at the time of your consultation.

The hairline brow/forehead lift is performed by making an incision just behind the hairline to remove a strip of skin and underlying tissue. This procedure is ideal forpatients who want to both lift the eyebrows and raise and shorten the forehead.  This procedure not only elevates the brows, but can reduce forehead wrinkles and correct eyebrow asymmetry. Once healed, the resulting scar from the incision, is virtually undetectable and is disguised by the existing hairline.

Another commonly used approach is the internal browpexy. This procedure is performed at the time of upper eyelid surgery to stabilize and provide a modest lift to the tail of the brow. There are no additional incisions as this is done through an upper eyelid approach. This procedure is not designed to provide a dramatic lift, but a conservative lift and stabilization.

Other approaches include the endoscopic forhead lift, the direct brow lift, and external browpexy. Surgery is typically performed under local anesthesia with sedation. Recovery takes about 1 week with some bruising, swelling and tenderness of the brows for several weeks. Please visit with Dr. Joos to decide what approach is best suited for you.
