Eyelash Abnormalities & Trichiasis

Trichiasis is a common eyelid problem where eyelashes grow in the wrong direction toward the surface of the eye. This can cause pain, irritation, tearing, light sensitivity and changes in vision. If trichiasis is severe it can cause injuries to the cornea resulting in infection and vision loss.

FAQs

What causes Trichiasis?

Many times patients may have trichiasis for unknown reasons. Other causes include previous eye infections, chronic blepharitis, autoimmune conditions, burns, trauma, or previous surgery.

Treatment involves removing the eyelashes either by plucking out the lashes to promote redirection, electrolysis (permanent removal of the eyelash follicle), or surgical excision of the eyelash.
