woman touches her festoons

Festoons

Festoons are abnormal pockets of soft tissue swelling that form where the lower eyelid meets the cheek.  These differ from the usual lower eyelid bags in that they are not fat but actual fluid within the soft tissues. These can be inherited or be caused by systemic factors such as allergies, fluid imbalance, thyroid disease or poor lymph drainage. The fluid in these festoons can fluctuate throughout the day.

FAQs

How are festoons treated?

Treatments include injections of sclerosing agents (such as doxycycline), CO2 laser resurfacing, surgical removal of the abnormal tissues or a combination of these. Although unsightly in many cases, festoon treatment is usually notcovered by insurance.  Repair of festoons is frequently done at the time of upper and/or lower blepharoplasty to give patients an overall refreshed and rejuvenated appearance. Because of the unique nature of festoons, swelling may last longer than in typical eyelid surgery but with frequent icing for the first 2-3 days after removal, swelling typically resolves in 1-2 weeks.
