filler injected into woman's under eye

Under Eye Dark Circles & Hollows

Dark circles under the eyes are caused by several factors. The eyelid skin is the thinnest on the body which makes underlying structures-such as veins- visible just beneath the skin. Loss of volume and descent of the cheek fat pads can also cause a depression, known as the “tear trough” which creates a clear dividing line between the eyelid and the cheek. Frequently, herniation of fat about the tear trough causes shadowing just below the fatty bulge resulting in a dark circle. This is most noticeable in overhead lighting, which is common in most social situations. As you can see, there are several reasons these dark circles occur. Because of this, it is important to see a specialist with training in eyelids and the delicate tissues around the eye, such as an Oculoplastic surgeon.

When injecting this area with filler this area, it is critical to select the correct type of product. Because of the thin skin and underlying tissue, it is best to avoid products that draw in a lot of water (hydrophilic) such as Juvéderm.  I prefer products such as Restylane and Belotero and fill these areas conservatively with a blunt-tipped cannula. In addition to proper product selection, the product must be placed in the correct location. Your surgeon can advise you as to what the best treatment is, such as dermal filler versus more invasive treatments such as surgery. For more information on dermal fillers click here.
